UNICELL public works cell opens
a rehabilitation and aid office .
This Office has been set up to facilitate the rehabilitation process of the dam affected Adivasi * and farmer families in the Narmada Valley . (*Adi = primal + vasi= inhabitants)
“Since rehabilitation is not complete (see attachment for image) and seemingly unfeasible there is a danger that these project affected people might move into our cities and add to our misery (as it is we don't have enough space to park our cars) - it is a sink or swim situation… It is best that they remain where they are”
C.E.O, UNICELL
The Sardar Sarovar project as you may be aware has got a clearance from the Narmada Control Authority to increase the dam height to 121.92m providing immense benefits to Gujarat , Rajasthan and Maharashtra . This decision will affect 35,000 families by submerging their houses and lands. The Madhya Pradesh Government does not have cultivable land to offer the ousted. In Maharashtra the rehabilitation is yet to be completed. The work on the dam though has begun full swing and submergence is expected by June.
Since the State Governments have failed to resettle 35.000 families UNICELL has designed inflatable tubes to keep the cattle, humans and even their cultivations afloat. (see attachment for image)
“I have been to some of the rehabilitation sites in order to survey the viability of our products. Some of these sites are adjacent to areas having Back Water Level markers (see attachment for image) It is possible that even the rehabilitation sites will be submerged (as has happened in the case of Bargi dam in the villages of Bijasen, Sarangpur, Sarra, Anakwada, Padmi, Sahajpuri, Maili, Gumti etc)… Thus increasing the significance of our floatation equipment”
